Happy New Year!

I'm kicking off the new year with this creamy, dreamy, and totally Kid Friendly Green Smoothie because I'm not sure about you, but after all the indulgence around the holidays, we need a reset. And after all, this is that time of year when people make those resolutions to be healthier, which almost always involves some sort of smoothie, right?

Are you one for resolutions? I'm not much for making resolutions, but kind of think of the first of year as a time to refresh and reenergize. I spend some time reflecting on the past year, let go of the things that are holding me back, and move forward into the new year ready to go!

Anyway, this nutrient packed smoothie is great whether you you're looking to keep those healthy you resolutions or just want something tasty.

If, like me, you have a little one who gives you that look, you know the one, every time greens make it onto their plate, smoothies like this one are great. The flavor and sweetness of the fruit makes even bitter greens like kale nearly undetectable aside from the color. Which works for us since she doesn't mind if the greens are in there, she just doesn't want to taste them. Hemp seeds add to this smoothie's nutrition, but wait...

What's the deal with Hemp seeds? While it's true these little seeds are from the cannabis plant, there's no need to worry about getting the kids or yourself high as the seeds do not contain enough of the compound to produce the effect. These little seeds are however nutrition powerhouses, packed with healthy fats including omega 3 and omega 6, minerals, fiber, and even protein. One serving has 10 grams of complete protein, meaning it contains all amino acids including the 9 our bodies can't produce. So, next time someone asks "where you get your protein" you give them the "are you serious?" eye roll and tell them to get educated!

As for the flavor, hemp seeds have a mild nutty flavor that my kids like. Besides smoothies, we also like to mix them in with oatmeal and sprinkle some over salads.

make it your own

This recipe is really just a basic smoothie template. Make it your own by switching up what greens you use or try using different fruit or a combinations of fruits.

I have two kiddos who love smoothies in any form and one who only likes them thick, but slurp-able so I always use frozen fruit with less milk, but you can always adjust the consistency to your family's liking by using fresh fruit and/or more liquid.

Also, feel free to switch up the fruit you use. Mango is a favorite around our house, but almost any fruit will work.
