Ingredients
You'll need 6 simple, whole food ingredients for this recipe.
- frozen berries
- oats - old fashioned or quick
- chia seeds or flax seeds
- maple syrup
- fresh ginger
- non dairy milk
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
This smoothie is very simple to make. Start by pouring the non dairy milk and oats into blender. Blend together until creamy and the oats have broken down well.
Add the berries, chia or flax seeds, maple syrup and fresh ginger. Blend again until well incorporated and the fruit has broken down fully. That's it! Pour into glasses and serve immediately.
Hint: To peel fresh ginger, hold firmly in one hand against a cutting board and use the edge of a spoon to gently scrap down removing the skin. Work your way around the ginger until all skin has been removed.
Substitutions
- Berries - instead of strawberries and blueberries, you can use raspberries, blackberries or any combination of them.
- Chia seeds- flax seed can be used instead of chia seeds
- Oats- use old fashioned or quick oats. Be sure to use gluten free certified, if needed.
Variations
- Spicy - add a bit more ginger for more zing
- Deluxe - make a smoothie bowl with fresh fruit, granola and/or nuts and seeds
- Kid friendly - adjust the amount of ginger and maple syrup depending on your little ones' taste.

Equipment
You'll need a blender for this smoothie. A high powered blender is preferable to get the smoothest texture.
Storage
If you have any smoothie left over or like to make ahead you can store in the refrigerator for up to a few hours.
You can also pour leftovers into an ice cube mold and freeze for later. Allow to thaw in the refrigerator or pop the cubes into blender with non dairy milk and blend.
Top tip
You can freeze fresh ginger so you always have some on hand. Simply peel the ginger using the method above in the "hint" section, cut into manageable pieces and place in a freezer bag. It will last for months this way.
