This creamy homemade Tofu Cream Cheese is easy to make with simple ingredients and tastes amazing. A good source of protein and budget friendly too.

We already have a nut based version of cream cheese on the site. But, cashews can get expensive so we wanted to have a more budget friendly option too. This Tofu Cream Cheese is inexpensive while still being creamy, tangy and every bit delicious.

How can you use this cream cheese? It's great smeared on bagels, as a spread on sandwiches and can also be used in many of the same ways the traditional version is.

Ingredients

This recipe is made with just 4 simple ingredients that are available in most everyday grocery stores.

  • extra firm tofu
  • lemon juice
  • nutritional yeast
  • salt

See recipe card for quantities.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Herbs - fold in herbs such as chives, dill and/or scallions.
  • Fruit - fold in chopped strawberries or blueberries and sweetener of choice.
  • Vegetable - mix in finely diced carrot, red bell pepper and chive.
  • Coconut oil - you can add 2 tablespoon coconut oil for added richness and a firmer set after chilled.

Instructions

This recipe is really easy to make. Drain tofu and lightly squeeze to remove excess water. Then blend with remaining ingredients until creamy.

Combine all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor or blender.

Blend until smooth and creamy, scrapping down sides of bowl as needed.

Top Tip

You might think using another tofu such as silken would be better in this recipe, but you want to use extra firm tofu here. There is too much water in softer varieties so the final product won't be thick enough to be spreadable.

Equipment

You will need a food processor or blender to make this recipe.

Storage

Store cream cheese in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Good for 4-5 days.

Common Questions

Is tofu cream cheese healthy?

Tofu cream cheese is typically lower in fat and calories than nut or dairy versions. As long as there are no soy allergies, it can be part of a healthy meal.

Can you use tofu like cream cheese?

Tofu based cream cheese is a great alternative to dairy cream cheese. It can be smeared on bagels, on sandwiches and in many other applications.
