Blueberry Steel Cut Oatmeal is a hearty and nutritious way to start the day. This bowl has cardamom infused blueberry sauce that makes oatmeal anything but boring.

Nothing beats a warm comforting bowl of oats for breakfast on a chilly day. So as we start heading into cooler weather here's a recipe we will be enjoying regularly, Blueberry Steel Cut Oatmeal.
Steel cut oats have a satisfying nutty flavor and chewy texture that we think is a major upgrade on rolled oats. The easy blueberry sauce infused with cardamom really kicks this humble breakfast staple up a notch too. And the date and nut crumble adds a delicious crunch that pairs so nicely with the creamy oats.
We really enjoy the flavor and texture of steel cut oats, but you can still enjoy this bowl with old fashioned rolled oats or even quick oats.

Ingredients
Steel cut oats are the main ingredient in this bowl, but how are they different than old fashioned oats? The main difference between the two is how they are processed. Steel cut is made by cutting the oat kernel using a sharp steel blade hence the name. Rolled oats start out the same way, but are processed a little further. The oat kernels are steamed and then flattened by machine rollers. This allows the oats to cook faster than steel cut.
Cardamom is a spice in the ginger family that is often enjoyed in Indian cuisine. It has a complex flavor that is a bit herbal, citrusy and spicy. It pairs well with many fruits such as citrus, peaches and blueberries.

- steel cut oats, quick cook or traditional
- non dairy milk
- water
- salt
- blueberries
- maple syrup or cane sugar
- ground cardamom
See recipe card below for quantities.
Substitutions & Variations
- Steel cut oats - instead of steel cut oats, you can use old fashioned rolled oats or quick cook oats.
- Blueberries - instead of blueberries you can use strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, peaches or other stone fruit, etc.
- Cardamom - instead of cardamom you can use cinnamon.
Instructions
This breakfast bowl is really easy to make. Start by simmering the berries until broken down and jammy. While the berries cook start the oats. The length of time needed to cook the oats will vary based on the type you select. Quick cook steel oats will be ready in about 10 minutes while traditional steel cut will take around 30 minutes. Either type work depending on how much time you have available. I used quick cook for these bowls.

Combine blueberries, maple syrup and cardamom in a small pot.

Cook, stirring often until blueberries burst and become jammy.

Combine oats, non dairy milk, water and pinch of salt in a small pot. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 7-10 minutes until tender and creamy.

Optional: We top our oatmeal with a quick date and nut crumble made of chopped almonds, pecans, walnuts and dates.
Top Tip
You can cook the berry sauce ahead of time to save time later. Prepare sauce as instructed then allow to cool completely. Once cool transfer to a container with a lid and store in the refrigerator until ready to use. You can also double or triple the recipe to have sauce for several days.
Equipment
There is no special equipment needed for this recipe. Basic kitchen tools are all that's needed. You can use a food processor to chop the nuts and dates for the crumble, but a knife works just as well.
Storage
If there is any leftover blueberry sauce and/or nut crumble store in separate containers in the refrigerator. Good for 3-4 days.
